Once a Norman stronghold, the first in Sicily, Troina surveys a landscape of settlements dating back to the late Neolithic of the 4th millennium. Its rich history reflects that of Sicily with a succession of cultures including Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Vandal, Byzantine, Islamic, Norman, French, Hohenstaufen, Catalan, Spaniard and Italian.
