Strategically situated on an island, Suakin, known as a port by the Romans, developed as a thriving emporia in Mediaeval times; flourishing until the Ottoman era. Largely rebuilt by the mid C19 its coral stone buildings were left to crumble in the early C20 as merchant companies deserted it for the new Port Sudan.
Awaiting funding.
