Grand Turk - Turks and Caicos Islands

Inhabited by Lucayan indians prior to the Columbus landfall it was then de-populated until the raking of salt became a major industry. Many wrecks line its shores. The National Museum Foundation disseminates information particularly about the Trouvadore a Spanish slaving ship which was wrecked in 1841 some years after Britain abolished slavery. The 'cargo' of 197 Africans were rescued, housed, employed, baptised and eventually given land to farm in the British territory.
